A brief journey, stories told in a sequence of pages weaving images and text. By playing with pacing, scale, alignment, and the multitudes contained in the image selection, the layout design seeks to tell a story, narrating a particular experience, perhaps an emotional connection or a spark of inspiration.
Off the Wall
To reflect the free spirit of this dancer’s home just outside of Paris, some of the images run large but are also contained by a border paired with a smaller image allowed to bleed off the page. The article flows with a vertical movement.
An Orphaned Masterpiece
This layout aimed to showcase the beautiful moments created by architecture, playing with form in this sculptural home in Chailly-en-Biére. I tried to draw attention to small geometrical details, and to celebrate the clever use of materials by running some quieter moments full page.
Trust the Process
This townhouse in Lisbon plays material and graphic form inside and out. I tried to display the images as large as possible so the viewer could appreciate all the details in the home, in a way that felt free, soft and inviting. The display typeface, Prisma by Linoto, reflects the graphic quality of the home.
Dream Sequence
The beauty in the interiors of this 19th-century house is both subtle and overwhelming. The play with scale, color and light is exquisite and photographer Alejandra Hauser was able to capture grand gestures in an intimate and meditative way. I ran the images large to give them a hero status in the narrative.
Economies of Scale
This layout balances showcasing the architecture of the home and the life of the family with small children in a five-unit complex in Santiago, Chile. The lines of the wooden slats and beams vary in density on every spread and serve as a graphic through-line. The candid moments captured by Cristóbal Palma provide an honest window into the family and the community’s life.
Renting in Office (+)
We were interested in showcasing politicians who rent their homes in a positive light. I discovered illustrator Oscar Duarte’s work on Behance, who at the time was still unpublished. His vibrant and optimistic style, influenced by constructivism, was a perfect fit for the subject matter.
Dwell Asks
Over the years I’ve specialized in working with illustrators. I love collaborating with talent around the world and seeing their sensibilities translated on the page. Every issue features a single-page illustration, originally for a Dwell Asks segment, currently for one called Love It or Hate It. These appear only in print, but I also commission illustrations regularly for web-only stories.
