Dwell Magazine
Dwell is a design, home and architecture brand with a bi-montly print publication and 4.4 million visitors a month on Dwell.com. Dwell was independently founded in 2000. Advocating for design from a humanistic, genuine perspective, Dwell features projects that serve the needs of real people and frames new ways of living. Its custom photography aims to be honest -as in unstaged, and to honor the point of view of the photographer. The magazine and brand design reflect an optimistic and vibrant love of design.
Dwell’s most ambitious travel issue featured a photo essay of mountaineering huts in the far reaches of Italy’s Alpine mountains, three homes in a remote Canary Island by architect Bernjus Gisbertz Szajak, and a historical fortress in Central Bhutan. Featuring a young family in Rosario, Argentina, we selected this image for its sunny, intimate warmth, as a mother photographs her husband and baby from their apt balcony. This was my 4th cover for Dwell and our aim was to achieve a bright, youthful and design-centric cover for a travel issue, publishing at the heels of the Covid pandemic.

For this Made In America issue, Dwell featured independent design shops from around the country. Often these places champion vintage design and emerging talent, and they serve a hub to a community, as is the case with Lichen , in Queens, NY. By featuring them on the cover we’re celebrating these vital drivers of our design culture. This was the last issue using a regimented headline template. In January 2022 we switched to allowing the headline type design to change on every issue.

The cover of this kitchen and bath issue captures the team’s continued interest in experimentation. In previous issues we updated our cover approach by featuring portraits, like the owners of Lichen in Nov/Dec 21, K’era Morgan, a Dwell 24 designer in Sept/Oct 21, and a young Canadian family in Jan/Feb 22. Given the unexpected perspective of this image, it was a surprising suggestion by Photo Director Sue Getzendanner, but it fit the issue theme perfectly. Graydon & Harriott shot in color, and beautifully in black and white film, which we also considered. The typeface is Galeria by LatinoType.

When the photos of this Lisbon townhouse came in from Matthew Avignone we knew immediately we had a cover story. The home by Fala Atelier experiments with materials and form, and reflects the design interests of the homeowner. We settled on a playful image of mother and daughter in the back of the home because of its optimistic warmth and the graphic interplay of materials. After exploring different typefaces, we landed on Prisma by Lineto for its simple geometrical qualities.
